Spring is calling - let's prepare our greenhouses!
Isn't it wonderful that after a long winter we finally got spring? But before planting the first seedlings this spring, it is very important to properly prepare our faithful helper - the greenhouse! And we, as caring owners, must take care of its cleanliness and health. So, let's get to work and turn the greenhouse into a cozy, fertile oasis!
Cleanliness is the first step to success
First of all, before the big frosts, usually in November, you need to carry out a sanitary cleaning of the greenhouse. It is like a general cleaning of the greenhouse! Its goal is to thoroughly remove all traces of the previous season and prepare it for further use. Start with plant residues; remove them not only from the inside of the greenhouse, but also from its surroundings. Then it is time for cleaning! Gently clean and rinse the structures, equipment with water, and don't forget all the corners of the greenhouse and the roof. Make sure that the drainage and ventilation holes are clean! Why is this important? Because even the smallest particles of dirt can prevent disinfectants from working effectively.

Protection against pests and diseases is a prerequisite
In late autumn or early spring, pay special attention to the greenhouse - it needs to be disinfected and disinfested. Disinfestation is the fight against annoying insects and arachnids. You can use various means - from chemical to ecological. And disinfection is the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms, such as fungi, viruses, bacteria. The choice of cleaning agents is really wide! The most popular methods are fumigation (treatment with toxic fumes) or washing, spraying with various solutions.
Fumigation with sulfur fumigators – exceptional efficiency
If you decide to use sulfur smoke boxes, carefully calculate the required amount (30 g/m3). Do not forget to close all doors and openings tightly. Arrange the smoke boxes evenly on non-flammable trays and start burning them from the farthest one. When you are sure that they are all smoldering, rush out of the greenhouse and close the doors tightly. After 36 hours, open the greenhouse and let it air out well - at least 48 hours. Be patient, if the smell still remains, air it out until it disappears completely. Remember that smoke can damage painted surfaces, so protect them!
Washing is a gentle but important step
Washing or spraying is like a greenhouse SPA procedure. With this method, we cover the surfaces with a special solution. Various means can be used, from pesticide mixtures to organic extracts. And what to do with the film - the greenhouse cover? If you use it repeatedly, be sure to remove it, wash it and dry it. Glass and polycarbonate covers can be sprayed with various mixtures. Don't limit yourself to just the greenhouse walls! Be sure to disinfect the pots, seedlings and all tools.

Soil – the foundation of your harvest
And now is the time to take care of the soil. It is best to disinfect it in early spring, before sowing. The ideal option is to replace the soil with new one. It can be supplemented with expanded clay, perlite or other useful materials. But if this is not possible, we can only replace the soil in the growing nests. If we do not change the soil, we disinfect it in the chosen ways: fungicides, chloralka, lime or even wood ash. Or maybe try sowing siderats? Mustard, rapeseed - a great choice!
