Spring is calling – prepare your greenhouses for a thriving season!
Spring is here—let’s get your greenhouse ready to grow! After a long winter, the arrival of spring feels like a breath of fresh air. But before planting your first seedling, it’s important to prepare your most trusted companion—the greenhouse. A clean, healthy greenhouse sets the stage for a thriving season. So let’s dive in and transform it into a welcoming, productive oasis!
Cleanliness is the first step to success
Before the first frost sets in—typically around November—it’s time for a thorough greenhouse cleaning. Think of it as a seasonal reset: the goal is to remove every trace of the past growing season and prepare the space for what’s ahead. Begin by clearing out plant debris, both inside the greenhouse and around its perimeter. Then, it’s cleaning time! Gently wipe down and rinse all structures, equipment, corners, and even the roof. Don’t forget to clean the drainage system and ventilation openings too. Why is this important? Because even the smallest specks of dirt can reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants. A clean greenhouse is a healthy greenhouse—and the first step toward a successful season.

Protection against pests and diseases is a prerequisite
In late autumn or early spring, pay special attention to the greenhouse - disinfection and disinsection are required. Disinsection is the fight against pesky insects and arachnids. You can use a variety of tools, from chemical to organic. Disinfection is the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms such as fungi, viruses, bacteria. The selection of detergents is really wide! The most popular methods are fumigation (treatment with poisonous smoke) or washing, spraying with various solutions.
Fumigation with sulfur chimneys is particularly effective
If you decide to use sulfur chimneys, carefully calculate the required amount (30 g/m3). Remember to close all doors and openings tightly. Arrange the chimneys evenly on the non-combustible trays and start burning them from the furthest one. When you are sure that they are all smoldering, rush out of the greenhouse and close the door tightly. After 36 hours, open the greenhouse and let it air out well - at least 48 hours. Be patient, if the smell is still present, ventilate until it is completely gone. Remember that smoke can damage painted surfaces, so protect them!
Washing is a gentle but important step
Washing or spraying is like a greenhouse spa treatment. With this method, we cover surfaces with a special solution. A variety of agents can be used, ranging from pesticide mixtures to organic extracts. And what to do with the film - greenhouse cover? If you reuse it, be sure to remove it, wash it and dry it. Glass and polycarbonate coatings can be sprayed with various mixtures. Don't limit yourself to just the walls of the greenhouse! Be sure to disinfect pots, nurseries and all tools as well.

Soil is the basis of your harvest
And now it's time to take care of the soil. It is best to disinfect it in early spring, before sowing. The ideal option is to replace the soil with a new one. It can be supplemented with expanded clay, perlite or other useful materials. But if this is not possible, we can change the soil only in the growing nests. If we do not change the soil, we disinfect it with selected methods: fungicides, chloral lime, lime or even wood ash. Or maybe try sowing siderata? Mustard, rapeseed - a great choice!
