The short answer: you can stretch one growing season into months of steady harvest with succession planting — either sowing the same variety every few weeks, or sowing varieties with different maturity dates on the same day. Fast-maturing annual vegetables even allow a second full planting in the same season. Below are both methods, plus the propagation basics behind choosing your seeds.

How do you extend the harvest?

Method 1: stagger the sowing dates

Spread sowing start dates of the same variety (with a consistent days-to-maturity figure) to cover the whole harvest window. You also need to know how long the plant keeps producing — tomatoes, for example, yield for about 3 weeks per plant. Method 2: one sowing date, different varieties

Sow varieties of the same plant with different maturity dates on the same day. Three tomato varieties maturing at 72, 102 and 132 days give a steady nine-week supply from a single sowing. This method takes more experience — yield potential and harvest duration differ between varieties — but saves repeated sowing work.

How do plants actually reproduce?

Sexual reproduction happens when male gametes (sperm in pollen) meet female ones (eggs in the ovule) — the resulting seed carries unique genetics. Annual vegetables reproduce this way, completing their whole cycle (sprouting, growth, flowering, seed production) in one year.

Asexual reproduction — division, cuttings, tissue separation — produces plants genetically identical to the parent. It's widespread among perennial fruits, berries, nuts and many garden varieties.

Open-pollinated seeds arise from self-pollination or natural cross-pollination and keep their vigor and traits through the generations — heirloom seeds, passed down for many plant generations, belong here. A greenhouse plays a useful role by isolating open-pollinated varieties from foreign pollen. Hybrid seeds come from deliberate crosses targeting vigor, uniformity, size, yield, taste, storage life or pest and disease resistance. Note that seed saved from F1 hybrids (the F2 generation) can inherit both the desirable and undesirable parental traits — buy fresh F1 seed each season.
